Contrary to many peoples ‘harsh’ perception of Czech weather the weather in Prague is more comfortable than you might expect. The weather pattern in Prague alternates between mild and wet weather commonly found in western Europe and the cooler more settled weather found in eastern Europe and Russia.

The transitional nature of the climate means that Prague’s spring and summers, are generally the wettest seasons. Heavy rain is most likely between May and August when approximately 12 days each month may be wet.

Occasionally these downpours in the form of storms can be persistent and when coupled with similar conditions in other parts of central Europe Prague’s river The Vltava may break it banks. Severe flooding has occurred in Prague every 50 -75 years. The last occasion was in August 2002. Prague summers are for the most part mild or warm. Extremely highly temperatures are rare but sunshine totals are often over 7 hours a day.

The winters in Prague and the Czech Republic are colder than those of Western Europe. Between December and March average temperatures will be a few degrees above or below freezing point. Even so the weather may be calm.and as a consequence mists and fog may linger all day particularly in February.

Snowfall in Prague is not as common as often thought and in recent years the city’s December Christmas Markets have seen very little.

However severe cold spells especially after Christmas do occur when easterly winds from Russia and Siberia may set in. These winds do not always bring heavy snow but they result in temperatures well below freezing day and night sometimes for two or three weeks. When these conditions occur, even if the winds abate the cold is penetrating and dangerous.
